Install Windows Live Writer behind Proxy

Below are workaround for to install Windows Live Installer behind corporate Proxy. Unless your network admin open up some port you are not able to install Windows Live suite of application. Finally I had found some workaround.

1. Surf to Microsoft Update Catalog http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx

2. In the search box enter Live Writer, add item 2 and item 3 into the download basket then checkout and download.
MsUpdCatalog

3. When download finished, you will find lot's of filed in the download directories. This are the setup files for various language, at this point I don't have any clue to check the language, what I did was try each and everyone till I found the English setup files.

Note: Below are the English setup file name for Live Writer, for others live application this method should work.

System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater

Received above error when try to run an application done by my colleague, after hours of finding and uninstall and re-installed the Oracle 10g client it was cause by the NTSF file permission. Apparently the .NET data provider are run under difference authentication. What I did to solve this was to apply the File Securities permission to all the files and folders under oracle home folder. Same issue also affecting the ASP .NET application.

Thunder Inbox Corrupted

My Thunderbird 2.0 fail me, my Inbox with size of 500MB was gone :sad: . Well blame it on myself for not backup the mailbox, so I decided to use GMail as my Default Email client for my corporate email. With this I can sleep in peace because Google will do my backup :-)

If later I decided not to use GMail as my email client, I can still rely on it to auto Archive all my company email. :cool:

Update:
After further investigation, it was cause by Symantec AntiVirus which quarantine my Inbox when a virus was detected. So the blame was not on Thunderbird.

HTC Touch - Reading Chinese

After play with the PPC for few days one complain I have was there is a delay of about 2 seconds when you activated the SIP to change your input method. After some trial and error this was cause by the CE-Star which I installed, uninstall the CE-Star did not solve this problem so the only way is to perform a Hard Reset. After finding the cause of the problem I decided to find a replacement for the Chinese input for my HTC Touch. Below are details on what I had found.

To read and input Chinese follow this guide
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5_Tweak_Language_Chinese

This only solve on of the problem, because IE still not working.. to solve this you need to
  1. copy wince.nls from your CE-Star CD to PPC \Windows folder.
  2. download reloadnls from http://geocities.yahoo.co.jp/gl/hou_ming_2/comment/20060323/1143109827 and place it in \Windows\Start Up
  3. Execute it once manually, you need this step to sort of sign the exe in WM6

OSX86 using SATA

Finally upgraded my OSX86 to run in SATA. Previous my OSX 10.4.8 was running using IDE and since the drive start giving me error I decided to upgrade it to SATA. Below just a summary of steps I used;

  1. Intall the AppleNForceATA.kext (SATA driver for nForce chipset)
  2. Delete all the partition in the destination drive then use Disk Utilities to create a blank partition. Do not user the First Aid option cause this will not create a bootable partition for you. I learn this the hard way.
  3. Use SuperDuper to clone the HDD

The hardware I used for my OSX86 are below;

  • MoBo Abit AN8 Ultra (nForce 4 Ultra Chipset)
  • CPU AMD Athlon X2 3800+
  • 2GB RAM
  • 80GB SATA II
  • USB Mouse & Keyboard (yet to figure out how to use PS/2 Keyboard)
  • Dell 17" Ultra Sharp LCD

FOXIT Reader

A while ago I had change my default PDF reader from Adobe Acrobat Reader to Foxit Reader, well it work well for few months. I like Foxit because it's fast to load and use less memory and space. It support PDF Form and Javascript (so no problem for those corporate forms) unfortunately found following functions which cause me to switch back to Acrobar Reader.

  • Text selection are not as good as Acrobat Reader, selecting a block of text are difficult.
  • When you print to a PDF File like CutePDF Write the PDF file created became image. You can't select the text and search for text no longor working. Why I want to print a PDF file to another PDF file are separate issue and will not discuss here. :evil:

Speed up when Open Windows Explorer

Pickup some good tips today on how to speed up your Windows Explorer. Enjoy!

Q. When I open Windows Explorer, it takes a few seconds before it displays information. How can I eliminate that delay?

A. I fixed this problem by simply removing invalid entries from my system path. When Windows Explorer starts, it traverses the PATH variable, and invalid entries can extend the time necessary for Windows Explorer to initiate. To solve the problem, you need to ensure that each item in your PATH variable exists.

To do so, open the Control Panel System applet, and access the Advanced settings (on the Advanced tab). Click the Environment Variables button. Under System Variables, view the PATH variable and check each entry that makes up the path. (Entries are separated by a semicolon.) Remove any incorrect entries, and click OK. Click OK on the main Environment Variables dialog box.

For comparison the third screenshot shown the CPU resources when I am playing a XviD video (100% less CPU power needed as compare to Dreamscene)

VistaBootPRO to the rescue

I am running low in disk space do decided to get myself a 500GB harddisk and replace my two years old 80GB primary harddisk. My current setup have two HDD with total capacity 240GB. So the fastest way to migrate my HDD was perform a Disk Copy from 80GB to 500GB, this should be easy unfortunately not the case. Bum into several error and luckily manage to fixed it. It mainly cause by;

1. HDD too big
2. Windows VISTA Boot Manager (BCDEDit)

Below is the problems I have and how I managed to solve it, thanks to VistalBootPRO. This is the must have tools if you running VISTA and have dual-boot. I will skip the HDD too bit issue because it was fixed easily by PQMagic. It simply detect and change the partition type to ExtendedX (can't really remember the message, because I just click the Yes button).

After fixing the partition type I can now see my Boot menu, but when I select Windows XP it said my ntldr is missing and asked be to put in my XP CD and perform a repair. When I plug in my old 80GB HDD then it can boot, my guess was something to do with the boot record. So I boot into VISTA and lunch the VistaBootPRO and found out the the record in the Windows XP Boot Drive was pointing to {none} (refer pix below). Google for some tips and immediately I change the rive to my new HDD TaDa... back to normal.

To edit the Boot Record follow the steps below;

1. Click the Manage OS Entries button
2. Select the OS from the OS List window
3. Check the Rename selected operating system
4. Make the necessary changes
5. Click Apply button.

Oops Mistake Now I can't perform dual boot, this is because it always boot the default OS. In my case it's Windows XP, now I have a problem... I can't change the boot setting in XP because Vista use a new book manager The Boot.ini in no more there... Luckily found this tools which allow me edit Vista Boot settings in XP.

Free Firewall

If you like me hate the Windows Firewall then get this free one from Comodo. This is a very powerful firewall and sometime I think it's too details. Alternatively you may want to use Kerio Personal Firewall from Sun-Belt Software. Kerio provide less question ask but enough for you to decide what traffic you allow and deny.
