Since it release yesterday, was playing with it for many hours. Impression was pretty good. Load pages very fast and but occasionally found errors on certain pages. The very first issue was;

New ROM for my HTC Touch

Last week decided to flash my HTC Touch to Touch ESSentiaL v1.8. After using it for few days was pretty happy. Speed was very fast, now using my Touch without overclock and the response was crisp. At the same time I also upgraded the IPL and SPL. With this ROM it gives me Windows Mobile 6.1 and the build number was 20275.1.3.3

Another beta products from Microsoft Office Labs, basically this is a web site which allow user record their own tutorial video and upload to shared with others. All tutorial topics are restricted to Microsoft Products (what you expect). Screen cast recorder is provided to help you create the video.

Below a quick review on Community Clip v1; After you had installed the application, it start and stay in the system tray. It only provide 3 recording option as shown below.

After recording ended, what you can do was Save, Upload or Email. No post recording process allowed.

FinePrint 6

If you want to give the new version of FinePrint a try, you may want to skip. After installed I found it slow and not much enhancement which worth me to pay US20 for the upgrade. I am still happy with the v5.85 which I am currently using. Just my 2 cents.

Certificate Revocation List

Today my WSS not working and it complain that the Client Certificate was not valid. After checked and confirm the client certificate I used was the correct one, which one the only possible was the cert are revoked. Without access to the server which issue the cert, I opt for alternative way of solving this. After some searching below is what can be done to disable the checking for Revoked Certificate for your IIS.

This is a registry hack, used it at your own risk.

Setting up Client Certificate for SharePoint

To further secure your SharePoint server, you can implement client site certificate. With client certificate, you end user must install the certificate manually before they grant access to your server. How the cert should be distributed will not cover here. Below are simple steps on how to implement client certificate.

You need to prepare the Client Certificate before you start the configuration.

1. Setup your WSS to use SSL
2. Now in IIS Manager, select Directory Security tab, under Secure Communications click Edit…
3. Checked Required client certificates
4. Checked Enable client certificate mapping
5. Click Edit… button
6. Click Add, the select the Client Certificate, and the AD Account you with to map the certificate to.

For Client Certificate mapping, you can do it in two way.

• If you enter the password, all client having the cert will be logged as the account you selected
• If you leave the password blank, they will be challenge with NTLM (user id and password) when they first access the site

Increase your GMail Security

Do you know that you can increase your GMail security by always communicate in HTTPS? To do this login into your GMail, select Settings, scroll to the bottom, select Always use https under Browser connection.

Paste and Go 2

After upgrading to Firefox 3, being waiting for the Paste and Go 2 to update it’s installation files to support the final version, no luck. Decided to hack and get it installed myself. Below is how to do it.

1. Download the xpi installation file from the official web site.
2. Unzip using 7-Zip
3. Use notepad and edit the file install.rdf
4. Change following text from <em:maxVersion>3.0a1</em:maxVersion> to <em:maxVersion>3.0</em:maxVersion>
5. Now copy the updated install.rdf files back to the xpi file. You can use drag and drop. i.e. Open the xpi file in 7-Zip then drag and drop the file.
6. In FF3 click File->Open File… then select the Paste and Go 2 xpi file.

P/S: If you had Paste and Go 2 previously installed, make sure you uninstall before you proceed with the installation.

Google Talk Translation bots

Yup, you can had a translation bot added to your GTalk. For example if you need a English to French translation bot, add a contact called en2fr@bot.talk.google.com, click Yes when prompt to accept contact. Now whatever text you chat with the newly added contact will be return with the targeted translation text. It’s pretty cool and it support many 12 languages. Lively – Virtual World by Google

Google had launch a new services called Lively. It’s a 3D world which allow chat and you can create your own Virtual Room, choose from a set of Avatar (you can customise your avatar with dress and other outfit). You can also decorate the room with furniture.

Currently the top room are bearing Sex theme… Looks like sex still appeals. So far run without any problem on my PC with integrated Intel GMA graphic card. Will try at home to check did my Nvidia GeForce provide better experience.

How to save on paper usage

Some department in my company are on cost saving drive and the first thing they did is to cut down the paper usage. Below are some solutions which can be done.

1. DON’T PRINT…. Simple, just view on screen
2. Use Fine Print http://www.fineprint.com
3. Use your Printer Driver to print up to 2 or 4 pages per paper. Make sure you download the drivers from your printer manufacturer. The default print drivers from Microsoft does not support this. Alternatively you can use the Xerox Universal Printer Driver.

Multi Page Printing (Poster Printing)

A colleague of my asked me how to print an A2 PDF file into multiple A4 pages (to be exact 4 pages of A4, because A2= 4 x A4)? After some searching and finding below are the possible solutions. I divide the solutions to two part, printing Images and printing PDF documents (non Image).

A. Printing Images files as Poster

Microsoft Paint
Yes Microsoft Paint actually support Poster Printing, this features are hidden from most of the users (including me, only discover recently). Below are steps to do it in Ms Paint.

1. Load up an Image (File –> Open)
2. Open the Print Setup dialogs (File –> Print Setup…)
3. Change the Scaling Fit to option

Freeware 
There is freeware / shareware which support this features. Below I listed two freeware, you may Google “poster printing freeware” to check out more.

B. Print Everything as Poster

Printer Driver
If your printer driver support this, you are lucky else you need to rely on others method / virtual printer driver as describe later. In screen below my HP 2420dn support poster printing while my HP 4200 don’t. If your printer support poster printing you should be able to find the setting under Printer Printing Preferences.

Virtual Printer Driver
PrintGhot 1.0 from UsefulSoft allow you print any documents into multi page. Basically it is a virtual printer driver allow you output anything printable documents to multi page (poster print). http://usefulsoft.com/printghost/

Possible Solutions
This might work, but I have not try. It is just an idea only, in anyone try this out let me know.

1. Install Microsoft Office Document Image Writer. This will allow you print anything to an Image file
2. Use the method describe in part one and print the image files to multi page.

This might work for PostScript printer driver which can produce image files.

FireFox 3 Final

Yup… it’s final and to my surprise the Google Toolbar works (it’s not working in RC2). Below are Plug-ins I used in FF2 which does not work in FF3.

Need another reason to upgrade to FireFox 3, check this article, it does a benchmark using between browser on JavaScript and ACID 3.

Fuji Xerox release an universal printer driver which claim can be used for all printer, below is a quick review on it. In summary work pretty well with Laser Printer, so far able to detect a few HP LaserJet I added and one plus point I like about this printer drivers was it

• provide multi page printing (including booklet) – this instantly add multi page support to those printer driver which does not provide this function and need to rely on third parties application like FinePrint
• page scale up / down
• watermark.

Why Zoom and Fullscreen mode worked in FireFox 3

Found the zoom and full screen features in Firefox 3 very useful, just take following scenario. Figure 1 are before using the Zoom and Fuulscreen mode, in Figure 2 the reading experience are so much better.

If you follow my previous entry, you can now browse Zinio (selected) Magazine free. In default mode the viewing experience are not that good, but after using the zoom mode it's so much better. Just compare the screen yourself.

Setting up SSL for Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0

After some resdings and findings, below is a simple guide on how to setup the SSL (https) for WSS v3.

1. In WSS server, start SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration. 
2. Click Application Management tab, then Create or extend SharePoint Web application link
3. Click Extend an existing Web application link
4. Select the Web Application (SharePoint Site) which you want to extend by click on the drop down box next to Web Application.
5. Enter the Port number you wish to used. For SSL you can used the standard port number 443.
6. Used Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) = Yes
7. Select the required Zone
8. Click OK button to extend the site.

You might need to change the access mapping to reflect the URL if your WSS is going to publish to the Internet. the path are Central Administration > Operations > Alternate Access Mappings

Next steps is to setup your IIS SSL Certificate.

1. Start IIS Manager
2. In IIS Manager the newly extended site (SSL) is available. Right click on the Site Name, select Properties.
3. Select Directory Security tab, click Server Certificate... button
4. Follow the Certificate wizard to install the certificate for your new site
5. Click Edit... button
6. In Secure Communications windows, Checked Required secure channel (SSL)
7. Checked Required 128-bit encryption

To further enchance the security you might want to implement the Client certificates.

PUSHD and POPD

A quick dos command which let you map and un-map a network shared resources. Below are how to use it;

PUSHD \\<server name>\shared

The above command will map the drive and auto change to the mapped drive letter. Drive Letter are mapped from Z - A order.

The above command will un-map shared drive from Z to A order.

Turn Off Services Not Required

If you are using vPro and not using the AMT, you may turn off following services to save some memory.

Replace BioTouch (HTC Cube)

Since I am using spb Menu as my main application launcher, I decided to disable my BioTouch to save some memory (having memory issue because using Blue Touch ROM v5 Windows Mobile 6.1 - 8MB Page Pool). After some searching found this guide in XDA-Developer.

New FireFox Extensions that Save Times

After reading an article about 6 excellent FF extension, I had installed followings. Did not install other because Tab Mix Plus did a better job. :-)

1. Hyperwords - Select any word or words on any web page. A menu pops-up. Choose from any one of the many powerful commands. And that's it. Fully customizable menu and behavior.

2. Read it Later - This Firefox extension allows you to save pages of interest to read later. It eliminates cluttering of bookmarks with sites that are merely of a one-time interest. A commenter below (Chris) summed it up very well: “It’s a ’staging area’ for bookmarks.”

Not Able to View SAP Note in PDF

If your not able to view the SAP Note in PDF, kindly refer to Note 1131299. As indicated in Note 1131299, you need to go to your SAP Support Portal, click my Profile the follow by the Save button.

Depends on your PDF setting, your may get a corrupted PDF file call sapnote.pdf (in actual fact this is a HTML file with following message.

"An error occurred when formatting the SAP Note."

Why I am not Not Using FF 3.0 B3 as my Default Browser

The main reason was Tab Mix Plus not supported and I don't like default way of handling the Tab by FF 3. Now I think there is more reason to use it because the dev. build for TMP can install in FF3.

The version I used are 071228. Below is the link for TMP Nightly Build. You can also use the later build but your FF also need to be the latest build. I shall shay with B3 at this moment.
